In The Name of Allah, The Most Gracious, The Most Merciful.
Ramadan Awareness Campaign (RAC) 2007 was launched with a big bang at Webbs Avenue Park, Auburn, NSW, Australia. The theme for 2007: Health and how better to kick off the campaign than with a round robin competition of gut turning Touch Football with the giants of the sport.
The day began bright and early, 8:30am with the novices edgy and psyched for that tense first game. After the recitation of the Holy Quran the atmosphere was electric. All teams dressed in uniform, waiting in anticipation, the Quran being read on the loud speaker, the sun was shining, the air was still. A few nerves twitched as teams looked at each other. Some looked fit and fast, others looked skillful but most were thinking about the trophy (and the barbeque lunch) at the end of the day.
Competition kicked off at 9:30am. There were 4 groups, and each group member played against the other in the same group until 12:30pm. At that time 7 teams were eliminated we had a good break for Dhuhur prayer, a gourmet buffet lunch (see photos), and a very good talk and reminder by a local sheik about using Ramadan as an opportunity to change.
Everyone appreciated the food, the rest and the talk. But after the break there were 8 teams still in it with a chance of winning the competition. The quarter finals and semi finals were played after the break, with more teams being eliminated after each stage level, until we it came down to 2 teams. The Grand Final was going to be played between The Warriors and The Dream Team.
Both teams were exhausted and needed energy and none scored in the first half. Eventually the Warriors got their way and were cheering with a 2-0 win. Trophies were handed out to the runners up and the eventual winners. The winning team also received a large perpetual plaque, and in the interest of promoting good health and brotherhood, they had the opportunity to select a prize from several different team sporting activities.
Alhumdulilah , the day was an overwhelming success. Most people enjoyed all aspects and were very surprised and impressed with professional organisation and the value they received. The event was successful in promoting good health, brotherhood and a reminder to get ready for Ramadan. InshAllah the event will be bigger and better.
