What is Dua

Introduction to Dua (Supplication)

Dua is often referred to as a ‘weapon of the believer’. It is indeed a tool that, when utilised correctly, can enhance our inner spirituality, drawing us nearer to Allah s.w.t, and providing us with a greater appreciation for the blessings and mercy granted to us.

The Dua section of the Ramadan Awareness Campaign website is a great starting point for seekers of knowledge who want to incorporate dua into their everyday life.

We encourage you to take a look at the articles and audio/video links that delve deeper into the importance of dua.

FAQ- Frequently Asked Questions
  1. What is Dua?

Dua is a form of worship. It is a method of communicating with Allah s.w.t that can be performed in any place and at any time.
  2. Why is dua is important?

Dua is important, as it is a communication link between an individual and Allah s.w.t. Dua goes hand in hand with prayer and other forms of worship as ways of attaining nearness to Allah s.w.t. Making dua allows an individual to seek help and ask for forgiveness.

  3. Why is dua not accepted?

This is a very commonly asked question. The best answer is that Allah s.w.t knows best why certain dua remain unanswered. We at times believe that we alone know what is ultimately best for our affairs. However, Allah s.w.t grants our dua according to His plan for us. Also, dua may not be accepted if it is not sincerely made, or is made by an individual who involves themselves in forbidden acts and does not repent for their sins.

  4. Who should we make dua for?

Dua should be made by the individual for themselves, their family and friends, and the entire Muslim ummah. One should be generous when making dua- Ask Allah to grant you and others the good in this world as well as in the Hereafter. The Prophet said: "The dua of a Muslim for his brother (in Islam) in his absence is readily accepted. An angel is appointed to his side. Whenever he makes a beneficial dua for his brother the appointed angel says, 'Aameen. And may you also be blessed with the same.'" (Sahih Muslim).
  5. Can I make dua for things in this world?

Yes- it is permissible for an individual to ask Allah s.w.t to improve their condition in this world. However, we are advised not to concentrate on our worldly needs and wants alone. Rather, we should ensure that our dua is well balanced to incorporate both worldly and spiritual aspects. Those who only concentrate on the spiritual show a lack of balance, for we need Allah's help to lead a good life here as well. Similarly, those only asking for the good of this world will forget to consider the permanence and eternity of the hereafter.
